"The Inbetweeners" My Breastfeeding Story

As some of you may know I am like a self-proclaimed advocate of breast feeding. You know the type "Breast is best", "its the most organic you can be", "No formula", so on and so forth.

The time had come for me to go back to work after two amazing months, and I was prepared. No formula for my baby love!
Medela pump. Check.
Milk storage bags. Check.
Supply of frozen milk. Check.
Or so I thought....
Within the first month back I had burned through all of my back stock.
I couldn't figure it out. How did these moms work full time, pump to have enough for while they were away for 9,10 hours, and still have enough without literally pumping non stop?!?
I pumped at work, I pumped while I drove (probably illegal but oh well), I even woke up in the middle of the night to pump. Sometimes I swear my nipples were going to fall off.
Months had gone on and some days I was in tears worried that it wouldn't be enough for her. Stressing every time i was away from her.
My mom would causally mention the dreaded word.
FORMULA.
especially after i had recently gotten a terrible flu bug and couldn't eat or drink. Thus meaning no milk.

But NO! Not happening. I can do it.

Until Rylin's sitter nonchalantly mentioned she thought Ry wanted more milk after each bottle. She sweetly explained that she felt like the 6 oz per bottle i was bringing wasn't enough. And she said that she went though the same thing.

Holding back tears I told her I needed to hear that.  From a neutral person.
I called my mom (my go to problem solver). I explained what the sitter had told me and my mom said "Well you survived on formula" :)

Research followed. I scoured countless websites and forums. None too eager to talk about supplementing with formula.

It seemed there is the die hard breastfeeders (which i was) and the THE OTHERS. The ones who gave formula.
But what about the "inbetweeners"? The ones who nurse and give formula.

So I found myself standing in the formula aisle at Target. Dumbfounded. SO many different options.
I knew I wanted a supplemental formula. So i settled on Similac. Only because I had a coupon really. :)

Skeptical and feeling defeated, I headed home.
So that night the normal routine continued.
2:00 am my alarm went off. I stumbled out to the kitchen and did my nightly pumping.
I then settled back into bed.
Just as the sand man greeted me, my little punky butt woke up ready to eat.
I nursed but nothing was left. Normal for just having pumped. I was used to it though. Its like she has some internal clock for when I pump.

In the glow of the oven vent light I saw it.  The white and blue tub of "poison".
Well lets do this I said to myself.

I mixed up a bottle and gave it to her.
Miraculously (in my mind), she drank it. And then went back to sleep. No fussing. No staying up and sucking for what seemed like hours....

Heaven. That's what it was to my exhausted mind and body.

So you may be wondering... I do still breast feed. On command if I am home. And I still pump. Yes even while I drive. My supply may drop. But for now it works. She still has the best she can have and then some.

I just wanted to share my story for the other mothers out there. Struggling. Too scared to talk to their breastfeeding friends and don't want to seem like they are patronizing their formula friends.
Lets open the lines of communication Moms!

Something I read one time was:
I think we moms should pledge to never judge one another. We're all desperatly trying to do the mothering thing right. -Lysa Terkeurst

Thats it for now :)

Hey There, Its Been Awhile...

Hi. Its me, Grace
I haven't posted in so long you may have forgotten. Almost two and half years to be exact. I have been Mrs. Boyd now for that same amount of time and what an amazing time it has been so far!

(I will do a post on the special day later..)

Our family has grown over the last two years.

Some have stayed the same tho like my golden child aka Chase our very emotional dog. Our two horses Justice, my princess and Starbuck, the man child Marmaduke of a horse.

But about a year and a half ago....
We welcomed this crazy Queensland named JD,
which in case you were wondering stands for Josh's Dog.
Oh and I left out the part that he's DEAF. Yep, cant hear at all.
Someone please remind me why I agreed to that.... No I am kidding we love him. Its just having a deaf dog is a bit.... hmmm... trying at times.

Seven months ago we also welcomed the light of our life to our family.
Officially her name is Rylin Grace, but we call her all sorts of things...
JJ for Josh Jr., Punky Butt, Ry, Honey Girl.
People always say its an amazing feeling, the love you have for your child, but you don't understand it until you feel it. And when those same folks tell you that time flies, you don't realize it until you live it.

We also bought our first home right before that sweet girl was born. My suggestion to anyone buying a house, DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT DO IT AT 9 MONTHS PREGNANT!
But anyway we love it!

So I guess this is the introduction and announcement that I, Grace Boyd, mom of my sweet two legged creature and our numerous four legged creatures (oh, and a couple chickens) will be back to share our life with the few select people who may care. I will post about my new obsession of couponing. And gardening. And living in a suburban area with a rural heart...

I may even change my blog title name once i come up with something more clever, but for now it stays My Trail to Mrs.

That's all for now.
Be back sooner than last time...
xoxo, Me :)

Something Old: My Namesake

Much to my surprise I received a special delivery the other day all the way from Clinton, Illinois. Wrapped in a recycled checkbook box was a beautiful kerchief and broach. The kerchief, old but still in good condition, had the name Grace Lawson written on it. I knew right then this was a very special package.

Grace Helena Lawson (Newman) was born in 1896 in Richview, Illinois to Charles and Mary Ella Newman. She was the oldest of eight children.
Tragically Mary Ella, 28, was struck by lightning and killed while holding her youngest baby, Zola in front of a storm cellar. Grace was 13. Her and her siblings carried their mother and baby into the house. After this devastating event some of the children went to relatives, but Grace stayed home to help her father raise her four younger brothers. She also was able attend school through eighth grade.
She was married at age 18 in 1914 to William Allen Lawson. Together they had thirteen children. One girl, nine boys, and then three more girls. The youngest one, my grandmother, Laura Kathleen Lawson (Bush). They lost one son, Russell, at age 6.  She sent three boys off to fight in World War II in one week. All of them came home safely. A total of seven of her boys served in the military and all survived. She wrote them all faithfully.
Grace sadly lost William in 1949 at age 56 and also saw the death of three grown sons.
Grace's legacy lives on with her 25 grandchildren, her many great grandchildren, and her many many great, great grandchildren.

I, Grace Helena Simmons (soon to be Boyd), am one of those great grandchildren and I am so blessed to have received her name. She was a deeply spiritual woman with alot of strength. From all the stories I hear from my grandmother, her daughter, she was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother.

She passed away March 20, 1983. Four years before my birth.
I feel a special closeness to her although I never had the honor to meet this amazing woman.

And as I walk down the aisle on March 31, 2012 towards the love of my life, not only will I have Great Grandma Grace's kerchief and broach tucked in my bouquet as my something old, I will also have her name.  A name that I am so blessed to have.

Doilies and Jars

So I happened upon a wonderful blog/website a few weeks back and fell in love....
Sparkle and Hay is a blog for rustic chic inspirations.
Rustic chic?!?!?
That's just what I am looking for.
Periodically they send emails of super cool DIY projects.
And the other day I received one about doilies and mason jars.
Perfect for what I need.
So today I ran to Michael's. Bought some doilies and spray adhesive and then headed home to start my project.
And literally within minutes, I was done.
It was so easy.
I just followed the directions on the spray adhesive can.
Sprayed the jars where I wanted the doilies.
Placed the doilies on and voila :)

Invites and Such

After the crazyness of work and the holidays were over I realized two things...
1. Three months until the big day! *insert scream here*
and
2. I need to get started on the invitations!

With my laptop in front of me I scoured the internet for ideas. Grabbing bits and pieces from every one I came across.
All I knew was I need to capture the essence of "us" in these pieces of paper tucked in an envelope that will be unleased into the world....

Away I worked on the perfect wording and design.

Next was the printing.
LOTS of printing......

Then of course was the whole putting them together.

With a bag full of stuff, I showed up at my future sister-in-law's house. I layed all the goodies out on the table.
And she said, "Ok so what are we doing?"
With a smile, I replied, "I have no idea..."

After a laugh and the realization that I wasnt exactly kidding, we got to work.
Brainstorming as we went, the end resulted captured everything I wanted in our invitation.
Vintage. Rustic. Chic. Pretty yet imperfect.
Just like us.

So grateful to have my amazing future sister-in-law in my life to deal with my somewhat controlling yet winging-it way of doing things.

And with all this being said some have been unleashed on the world some are still being worked on.
Do-It-Yourself is somewhat time consuming...

Thats it for now.
xoxox,
Grace
